From the Ground Up....
Rugs are an important element in any room. They anchor furniture and create a boundary for different seating areas. In some cases, they act as artwork in the room with vivid color and pattern. For neutral rugs like seagrass and sisal, they add texture and can be layered with additional rugs or left natural. Neutral rugs can be used in any type of decor and are a good starting point if you like to change the decor around often. There are several places that I always like to put a rug. I use seagrass the most because it is durable, natural and I find it to be the most versatile. Living rooms (primarily anchoring the coffee table and seating around that), dining rooms (large enough for the table and chairs to be on it and have room around it) and bedrooms (foot of the bed ) are the most common places for me to put rugs. Offices usually have one that covers the floor under the desk and the seating in front of the desk. For bedrooms, I like to use something that is soft underfoot and experiment with color. How about rugs in the kitchen? Why not? I have a rug in my kitchen under a vintage table that I use as an island and I love it. It is a very durable jute rug that has a lot of texture and adds a furniture feel to my kitchen. With 2 kids, 1 husband and two dogs, these rugs go through a lot and surprisingly stand up extremely well. Another option for rugs is to use them as wall hangings. This can look incredible as long as the rug is a good quality and the size is large enough. Antique rugs add character and act as a unique element in the space. They are timeless and expensive but can last a lifetime. To me, rugs not only define a space, they set the tone for the decor and are an essential element in any room. The great thing about rugs is that they are available in all price ranges and come with endless options and combinations . Here are some great rooms for visual inspiration.

From a Renter's Perspective....
I came across this post from Smith Schwartz on Apartment Therapy and thought I would share it with you. This renter travels full time for work and prefers to stay in short term rentals rather than hotels and has given a funny account on some of his unexpected encounters. Sometimes as an owner, everything makes sense to you and you think you have the best rental out there. On the other hand, your guests might be scratching their head trying to understand your design choices and reminding themselves that it's only temporary. For this guest and many others, design mistakes and challenges are noticed just as much (if not more) as a rental with great decor. While some things might be out of your control, most things can be worked with and corrected. Consider the prospect of someone renting your space while they are working and not just vacationing. These types of renters need adequate space for working and good lighting. These renters typically rent for longer periods of time so having all of the creature comforts of home (and in working order) in your rental with attract more guests. Here's a little piece to get you interested.....
Dealing With the Unexpected in Furnished Rentals
Well-Designed Travel
Since I've been traveling full time for a while now, I've found myself in a variety of living situations. Thanks to popular travel sites like Airbnb, HomeAway and VRBO, I've been able to secure short-term furnished rentals that feel a little more like home than your average hotel room.
It's really fun combing through these sites and daydreaming about living somewhere new, but from a few pictures and a short write up, it's hard to know exactly the situation I'll be moving into. So far, there have been lots of unexpected sounds, experiences and many quirky decorating choices in the rentals that I hadn't anticipated. At this point I've come to expect the unexpected, and quickly adapt to new situations. When the refrigerator sounds like a jet engine, I work with headphones on. When a neighborhood cat jumps onto the balcony and into the living room (we were 6 floors up, where did it come from?), I grab a broom and shoo. When there's no working stove, I make dinner in a toaster oven. No matter how annoying or weird the situation, I remind myself, it's only temporary.
