Stay here.....Detroit, MI

Well hello there, and welcome to another awesome rental.  This week's rental is a collaboration of designers, local artists and merchants in the oldest neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. The owner Meghan McEwen, has the wonderful blog Designtripper about travel and design which was the inspiration behind Honor and Folly. Honor and Folly is a multifunctional space that is available for both overnight stays as wells as hosting small gatherings.  What I love about this rental is that it immerses the guests in the local experience.  With thoughtful interiors by local artists and artisans (which are also or sale I might add) , this unit embraces and highlights the very things that make it unique.  Guests are encouraged to mingle with the locals by visiting the restaurant downstairs, the artisanal coffee shop down the street and the local cocktail bar.  Amenities include an Honor and Folly city guide, vintage bikes, fully stocked kitchen, wifi and washer and dryer.  Rates for Honor and Folly start at $165 a night for one bedroom and $215 a night for both bedrooms.  For additional information and reservations, click here.

Making the most of what you have.........

Sometimes it's just not possible to do everything you want at one time.  Whether it's budget concerns or time management, there may be a list of things that you want to tackle but available resources only allow for a few things to be done at a time.  Here are a few things to consider.  Try re-arranging the furniture to create a different look.  You'd be surprised at the different looks you can create by moving pieces from one room to another.  Switch out nightstands with end tables from the living room.  If you have a long and narrow coffee table, put it at the foot of a bed and stack some pretty books on it.  Move some lamps around too.  Do you have a large ottoman?  Use it for a coffee table instead.  Find a large tray and place it on top of the ottoman and you have an instant table. The point is to create a different look with the things you already have and to re-invent them in a purposeful way.  Artwork, pictures and other decorative accessories can easily be moved and help to complete the transformation.  Take a look at some of the fabulous rooms designed by S.R. Gambrel for more inspiration.

Spring Is In the Air...........

With Spring right around the corner for most of us, it's a good time to freshen up your space and give it a good cleaning.  For some rentals, January might be a good time to do this so you can be ready for Spring break.  For others, this is the perfect time to get your rentals ready for the summer crowds.  To start off, you need to have a clean slate.  That is to say, have it really cleaned and include upholstery, drapery, carpets and all bedding.  Hardwood floors should be cleaned and waxed if needed along with grout cleaning on tile floors and walls.  From there, do a walk through and check to see if you need to touch up paint anywhere.  Scratches on the walls and chips should be touched up and filled in where necessary.  Doesn't all of this sound fun?  Well, it might not be your favorite thing to do but your guests and potential guests will see that your rental is well cared for and maintained which is crucial if you want to maximize your occupancy.  With a clean slate, you can add a few items to your decor to energize your space and add a pop of color.  Changing out pillows, adding a colorful throw and a throw rug are easy and inexpensive ways to change the look of your space.  Colorful vases and decorative objects are also important in pulling the look together.  Here are a few suggestions for adding color to your space.
